Maria Callas – The Complete Aria Collection 1946-1960

NORMA (Bellini), only one excerpt from Act I – as Norma – Jan. 2, 1958

THE END OF A GALA                                                                                              6’26

7. After the following scene with Adalgisa (Miriam Pirazzini) and Pollione (Franco Corelli) act I ended. During the intermission between acts one and two, a stunned nationwide audience of radio listeners learned that Callas, claiming illness, had refused to continue, and that consequently the performance would not continue. The performance was a gala, with the President of Italy, as well as other high government and city officials, in attendance. President Gronchi was informed first and took his leave before the management made the announcement from the stage. The commentary of the RAI announcers is complete as preserved, beginning at  the point that they realize that the delay in commencing act 2 is more serious than they had thought, and ending perhaps a few moments before the broadcast was in fact terminated.
